Mel Douglas, Jim Holsworth and George Fraser were on the Signals Battlefield Tour 1 – 10 April leading up to the Vimy 100 ceremony. The young soldier in the photo is Cpl Jonathan Cardenas, filling a jump position in 2 Sigs. Of course, we regaled him with jump stories and BS, but it was a great occasion to share a beer and impart a bit of Canadian airborne history to the next generation.
There were also six Gunner jumpers, old and new, with the Artillery contingent. Other than Ernie Beno, I missed getting their names. Mel would likely know who they were.
We visited Pegasus Bridge, but were unable to get to Ranville Cemetery where many of the 1 Can Para Bn boys rest. The wreath we laid (in the photo) was in Bény-sur-mer Cemetery. We did bump into Joanne de Vries and John Fotheringham at the Pegasus Museum and had a good chat.
Finally, any visit to Normandy would not be complete without a shot or two of calvados…mission accomplished….
